The Apotheosis of Washington

Americans and their delusions of grandeur. Painted in 1865, suspended 180 feet above the United States Capitol rotunda floor, this fresco depicts George Washington sitting amongst the heavens, surrounded by figures from classical mythology. You'd almost expect to see Washington, stretching his arm down, trying to reach God's index finger... Jeez!

I have to admit it looks pretty, though.
